P1 Final

BOX ONE / / CONFIDENCE

This box evokes the attribute of confidence. The overall design is bold because of the overlapping, high-contrast type, the layering of barcodes as a pattern, and the loud color palette. This box uses the fonts Stencil and Trade Gothic because Stencil is a bold serif ypeface with a lot of character (good for headlines & callouts,) while Trade Gothic is simple & clean sans-serif (good for body copy.) The fonts work well together because they have a similar shape, depite their weights; the 'o' of both fonts is more condensed, which hepled me determine what fonts would work well together.

This box is "the one" because it is unique in many different ways. Through the color palette, use of the barcode as a design element, and manipulation of type, this solution is dynamic and atypical for a cereal box design.

BOX TWO / / ENERGY

This box evokes the attribute of energy because the letterforms are playful, the content is more collaged and layered, and some callouts are warped. The letterforms on the front of the box were originally cut from various papers, arranged into each letterform, and then manipulated digitally. The cut paper adds a unique texture & quirk to the type. I was inspired by the idea of drop caps and I wanted to show the iconic cereal 'Rice Krispies' as the fun & playful cereal that it is. I chose to pair the hand-cut letterforms with DIN because it is a simple sans-serif font that works well with others. The warped manipulation of the type adds to the playfulness of the box, adding a little quirk to each side and expanding the flow of type across all planes of the box.

BOX THREE / / INFORMATIONAL

This box evokes the attribute of informational because the content is repeated, called out, and increased in size so that the value of the information is understood. The nutrition facts are legible, there are callouts about the simple qualities of the cereal, and the emphasis is on breakfast being the most important meal of the day. This box informs the viewer about why breakfast is important, why Rice Krispies can be a nutritious breakfast, and allows all of the content to be neat and organized. I played with dimesion, lighting, and shadowing in order to intrigue the viewer to learning more about this specific breakfast food. I paired Volta T with the dimensional type because I wanted to communicate the history of Rice Krispies; this font makes me think of a more vintage, historic design, which was the type of attribute I wanted to communicate.

FINAL THREE BOXES

  1. As a whole I think you created a nice collection of type expression. Your boxes do a good job of communicating through type.

That is shown especially well on your energy box. When I think of energy I think about when I am bouncing around all over the place and this box speaks to that side of me. When looking at it I am not focused on one certain aspect, but instead jumping around and looking at everything the box has to show.

I think your informational box is a strong concept. Your written statement was in depth and really helped me digest what your were trying to communicate. Without reading about this design, I had did not immediately understand exactly how you were provoking informational.

Your photography is beautiful and professional. My favorite photo is on the reflective black table, because it gives context but still looks professional. The photos that I think could be improved are the ones on the brown table. I think the background is distracting. (I think it is a backdrop of blinds) I think it works on the last one because of the contrast of the vertical and horizontal lines. It draws them directly to the subject. On the first two it breaks up the boxes as separate compositions and I think would be better shoed against a solid color wall.

Overall, you presented nice work and had a strong photography and written statements Good work!
