the p1 brief

look outside the box...please.

overview

the cereal box—type for breakfast? using the text/content from an existing rice krispies® box—type only (type as image?) + barcode + nutrition facts + three colors to communicate pre-determined attributes. present 3 constructed and photographed 3-d forms...

objectives

as a result of this project, students will…
_ explore the expressive potential of typography
_ communicate essence through graphic connotation in diverse media
_ solve communication problems within given parameters
_ engage in experimentation and alternative form-making processes
_ accomplish objectives—on-time and completely
_ demonstrate exemplary visual craft—hand and digital
_ methodically document relevant design inspiration and process
_ present work in a visually and verbally articulate manner

this may look like a packaging or branding "redesign," but the project is really about communicating attributes using only typography.

the problem: develop a range of three alternative designs that embodies (visualizes) a set of predetermined qualities—descriptors.

the method: read, understand, know the (supplied) content and 3-dimensional form (aka: box); consider concepts and principles of visual communication eg: structure, hierarchy, contrast, connotation of graphic form, composition, etc. consider, explore, investigate and experiment with analogue or alternative form making—in conjunction with digital tools. challenge and question traditional content hierarchies; employ either an exploratory or objective driven design process—both are valid.*

the requirements: each of the three designs should evoke a different attribute...
order
energy
comfort
confidence
informational
interdependence
refinement

each design should be the same size/dimensions as the supplied box—11.7 x 2.50 x 7.75"

and include all the supplied text—duplication is acceptable...except the logo

the kellogg's® logo—once. the size may vary from supplied

barcode aka: the universal product code—reproduced at supplied size

maximum of 3 (three) colors—can vary

the supplied "nutrition facts" table reproduced at supplied size

any single or combination of typefaces from the "approved list." consider the connotative value of the typeface(s) used

typographic form emphasis—no drawings, illustrations, photographs or cute elf-like characters; typographic ornaments?

remember to consider the nature of the 3-dimensional, spatial experience—there is more than one side, perhaps a preferred sequence and/or orientation.

final project deliverables: four process blog posts; at least three (3-dimensional) design mock-ups; 4–6 portfolio-level photographs of the mock-ups with description as described in the syllabus—on the course blog prior to the final reveal.
