Liz Hixon - P1 Final

Main Statement
I designed these three Rice Krispies boxes to communicate both the message of the cereal box itself as well as individual characteristics. Each box conveys a different characteristic that helps to present the message in a different manner. One design represents energy, one broadcasts confidence, and the final conveys comfort.

Design #1: Energy
This first design represents energy in the way that is a continuous design, all around the box, always moving forward, never stopping. It is a design that encourages people to interact and explore by picking up the box and turning it around to get the full design and to understand the full message. The front of the box presents positive facts about the cereal and the company, while the back of the box gives an “Get to know everyone's favorite breakfast buddies.”

Design #2: Confidence
This box demonstrates confidence through its bold use of cut type and the statement it makes without being immediately legible. In addition, with the uses of stylish lettering of the sort usually found in fashion magazines, it has a connotation of boldness and confidence in stepping into the world and making a brand new statement.

Proposed Design: Comfort
This third, proposed design is the box that I suggest communicates the message most effectively. It demonstrates comfort through its use of hand lettering, while at the same time giving a sense of fun with the continuing bar code design which wraps around the box. I believe this design is most effective and better than the other two because it communicates in an organized and legible manner, but also grabs your attention with a fun and bold statement, that also communicates a home-grown feel. “These simple grains provide a deliciously simple fun way to start the day.” This is the type of design that feels comfortable sitting on your kitchen table with the family gathered round, beginning their day together.

  1. Liz-
All three of your boxes are very visually unique and it is obvious that you explored a lot of techniques while you were creating them. I enjoy your used of cut paper (confidence) and hand lettering (comfort) on your boxes- they help portray the meaning of their attributes. The boldness of the many different letter forms sends a strong (confident) message while also staying very simple. The handwritten text on the comfort box seems playful.
You fully embraced the concept of non traditional brand hierarchy- each of the box represents kelloggs without using the logo or name of the cereal as the focal point.
From the photos I can tell that you were aware of the written content you were designing for. The pulled statistics/nutritional info over the heart and relation of "snap, crackle, & pop" with "get to know everyone's favorite breakfast buddies" are examples of this. The energy box is not as strong in this area however. As a student I understand its design and attention to breaking the traditional rules, but a different pulled quote from the text may have been more impactful than the current lime green text.
In your photos, the detail shots stand out. A few of the images are a little dark, but everything meant to be in focus is sharp and the compositions are visually appealing.
Over all great job at creating three very explorative and interesting boxes!
