Kylie Dressman - P1 Final

For this project I created three boxes that vary in color, typographic form, and tone.  When they are placed next to each other together, they complement each other by the contrasting use of color.  Alone, they each evoke a different attribute which are (L to R) Informational, Energy, and Order.

Side

Back

(L to R)

1.   I believe that the first cereal box is informational because the paragraphs that explain and give the history of Rice Krispies are the main focus on both sides of the box.  My goal for this box was to create contrast by using scale and color.  It displays the information in a clean and interesting way, and the hierarchy makes the information on the the box easy to follow and understand.  The reason for creating this box on the computer was to create variety between the boxes because the other two have headlines that are hand generated.

2.  For this second box I got off of the computer and experimented with cut paper typography and bold colors.  I believe that the second box evokes the attribute energy.  The random placement of the cut letters on the top and side of the box paired with the large and contrasting letters are what evoke energy.  The large textured letters wrap around and guide the viewer's eye around the box.

3.  After looking at work by artists such as Martin Venezky, Hugo Werner, and Andy Burgess, I was inspired by the collages that they did, and how they cut paper and took photos of them.  This is my attempt at collaging type.  I believe this box evokes the attribute of Order.  Although this box may look chaotic at first, it is actually neatly organized.  Each strip of paper is placed to create a grid on the box.  The computer generated type on the back of the box is also placed on a grid.  All sides of the box work together well, but they also work well alone because the sides do not depend on each other.

Proposed Design

I chose box # 3 to be my proposed design because it is the box that I explored the most with.  I had a lot of fun with this design cutting and organizing paper, and then editing them on the computer.  It also shows all of the information required in a non-traditional way.  I took a few of my proposed design photos with a purple backdrop because it brings out the bright colors on the box.  It also highlights the playfulness of the box.

BOX ONE / / CONFIDENCE

This box evokes the attribute of confidence. The overall design is bold because of the overlapping, high-contrast type, the layering of barcodes as a pattern, and the loud color palette. This box uses the fonts Stencil and Trade Gothic because Stencil is a bold serif ypeface with a lot of character (good for headlines & callouts,) while Trade Gothic is simple & clean sans-serif (good for body copy.) The fonts work well together because they have a similar shape, depite their weights; the 'o' of both fonts is more condensed, which hepled me determine what fonts would work well together.

This box is "the one" because it is unique in many different ways. Through the color palette, use of the barcode as a design element, and manipulation of type, this solution is dynamic and atypical for a cereal box design.

BOX TWO / / ENERGY

This box evokes the attribute of energy because the letterforms are playful, the content is more collaged and layered, and some callouts are warped. The letterforms on the front of the box were originally cut from various papers, arranged into each letterform, and then manipulated digitally. The cut paper adds a unique texture & quirk to the type. I was inspired by the idea of drop caps and I wanted to show the iconic cereal 'Rice Krispies' as the fun & playful cereal that it is. I chose to pair the hand-cut letterforms with DIN because it is a simple sans-serif font that works well with others. The warped manipulation of the type adds to the playfulness of the box, adding a little quirk to each side and expanding the flow of type across all planes of the box.

BOX THREE / / INFORMATIONAL

This box evokes the attribute of informational because the content is repeated, called out, and increased in size so that the value of the information is understood. The nutrition facts are legible, there are callouts about the simple qualities of the cereal, and the emphasis is on breakfast being the most important meal of the day. This box informs the viewer about why breakfast is important, why Rice Krispies can be a nutritious breakfast, and allows all of the content to be neat and organized. I played with dimesion, lighting, and shadowing in order to intrigue the viewer to learning more about this specific breakfast food. I paired Volta T with the dimensional type because I wanted to communicate the history of Rice Krispies; this font makes me think of a more vintage, historic design, which was the type of attribute I wanted to communicate.

Detail of Dimensional Cut Paper

For this project, I created three individual designs that portray a chosen connotation through text, color, arrangement, and texture. Exploration was vital to my final result, as I wanted to try an array of methods from paper cutting, text layering, hand type, and even a more rigid, informational type arrangement. I believe that I successfully visualized my three attributes: comfort, energy, and confidence.

To represent comfort, I used warm and natural feeling brown, pink, and peach tones. These colors were chosen to represent the sunset in the morning. The humanistic hand type contrasts with the familiar serif Mrs. Eaves typeface to give the box a classic look while also being playful. The inconsistencies and imperfections in the hand painted type add to the box's feeling of comfort. The soft opacity of the text contrasts with the stark negative space on the box's side flaps and back to add visual interest. The brown texture paper of the top flaps seem organic and earthy.

Energy is represented in my cut paper box through dimension, saturated color, and inconsistent layered type. Hierarchy is challenged on the "front" of the box to add visual energy. The viewer's eyes travel around the box's wrapping color fields, bold text, and bar code to increase the energy flow around the entire 3D object. The colors are light and gradated and large groups of text are leaded tightly and layered over other elements. The photographed cut type adds depth and dimension to the final box. The text is meant to energetically spring out at the viewer.

The confidence box is all about breaking conventions. Put the barcode on top? Sure! Use an entire panel for the cereal name? Of course! It also utilizes the idea of "alternate brand hierarchy" by using Simple Good Fun on the front panel, rather than the expected centered logo or cereal name. This challenges conventions in a confident and bold manner. Color and contrast are vital to communicating the feeling of confidence in this box. The stark white text on the intense red-orange background is complimented by the soft blue tones of the other panels. The box also displays confident through its structured and easy to read information, displayed simply for the viewer. The spotted scrawled type on the front panel makes the confident box also seem playful.

Refinement:
For this final piece, I focused on a simplistic approach. During the design process, I moved from a cut and scan method to purely computer. The handmade cut and scan method was not able to provide the refinement I wanted to convey. Therefore, once on the computer I placed each phrase, title and fact on the template with a conscientious effort to use minimal space. In doing so, I created order as well as refinement. The large color fields provide a clean, polished look. The combination of white, yellow and blue adds richness—yellow provides warmth, blue provides strength. I chose a combination of Archer and Gill Sans for my fonts, both having very clean, refined letter-forms.

Confidence:
For this final piece, I focused on a bold approach. During the design process, I used the cut and scan method. I then moved on to use the computer and used a duotone effect to add boldness through color. For colors, I chose red and orange—red provides boldness and orange provides confidence. While placing the scanned cutouts on the template, I combined straight and angled alignments aimed at creating a strong, dynamic look.  I chose a combination of Clarendon and Snell for my fonts—Clarendon being thick and curvilinear, Snell being well-established cursive letter-forms.

Energy:
For this final piece, I focused on a dynamic approach. During the design process, I used a cut and scan method. At first, the cereal box appeared too boring. Therefore, I moved on to use the computer and added a duotone effect. I chose orange and blue—contrasting colors that produce a lively affect. However, the cereal box still appeared too boring. I then turned to repetition—instead of repeating with digital fonts (Clarendon + Gill Sans), I decided to use my own hand lettering to overlap the digital type. This effect proved to add the desired energy to the cereal box.

For my client, I propose Energy. It is my most explored piece, and I believe the fun colors and energetic design best fits Rice Krispies.

Kelly Reeve P1 Finals

1. ENERGY (Yellow box) - The bright yellow and blue colors of this box create energy and serve to brighten a user's day. The cutouts and collage of letters on the box also create energy because of their contrasting differences and interesting patterns on each letterform. It takes a certain amount of energy for someone to read and comprehend the words on the box and what it is saying and therefore, the box itself expels energy and variation.

2. REFINEMENT - (orange, green, blue box) This box is very clean cut and refined. It is completely computer generated which makes the design clear and understandable. The box is telling the user how refined it is and how refined the creation and goodness of Rice Krispies is. The clean color combination is a clear indication of refinement because of its gentle suggestion of an exciting day ahead. The lettering of the words "Rice Krispies" also indicates refinement because of its flow and alignment across the sides of the box.

3. Presentation Box - CONFIDENCE (red, green, blue box) - The bold display of hand crafted lettering and the way it is placed on the box is an obvious indication of confidence. Letters that organic might generally not be that confident but because of the repetition and size variation of the words, they are very stable and sure, especially on a simple white background. The way the crafted words carry over to repeat in white on the back of the box also shows confidence in taking on a gray base color. The letters also creep across the corners to the back to show dominance.
