Liz Knochelmann P1 Final

For this project the assignment of a word was designated for each box. I chose energy, confidence and informational. The pink gridded box convey's energy with it's bright colors and intertwining handwritten type and computer generated text. The idea shows energy through the grid and proves that through the organization of letterforms the energy is conveyed neatly.

The second box, the pale blue and yellow, convey's information. This simplistic but chaotic form tricks the mind into believing that the information you are to absorb comes from the front. This is purely to then draw attention to the structure of the information on the back and allow the reader a seamless transition from point to point. This is the box that I would propose to a client. I feel this box is the most unconventional and non-cereal box like, but that's what I love about it.

The third box, convey's confidence. The way that the dark blue/black form has woven type and a gradient of typeface sizes the box itches for attention, therefore exuding confidence. The box, though simplistic on the front, shows its confidence through the changing paragraph forms and the vertical type.

The detailed shots of this box show the small copy and how the reader could potential decipher the text on the front, but then move to the back of the box to see the type in an orderly fashion and informationally laid out.

My final three final cereal boxes explore the expressive potential of typography through the themes order, energy, and comfort (back to front.) Each of these boxes conveys a different engaging graphic essence defined below.

This box exemplifies order. The communication of this attribute was accomplished through the clean and graphic quality of the lines, typography, and textured paper boxes. The type is set square and even inside each box and the paper texture is juxtaposed by the perfect edges of the squares. A black box was also added beneath the red boxes to give a sense of depth and organizational stacking to this piece. I chose to photograph this box on a black background so the white box would stand out and to further the message of order through the simplicity of the dominant colors, black and white.

This box exemplifies energy. The communication of this attribute was accomplished through a dynamic grid, overlapped text and elements, dynamic hierarchy, and bright and contrasting colors. I chose a simplistic design approach and color scheme to distract minimally from the form. This product was photographed on a pink background to highlight the fun and energetic aspects of the design.

This box exemplifies comfort. The communication of this attribute was accomplished through a the juxtaposition of hand-lettering and mechanical type, an emphasis on positive phrases and facts, and a light but warm desaturated color scheme. I chose a simplistic approach to the design and color scheme to refrain from overwhelming the viewer and focus on key positive facts. This product was photographed on a gray background to highlight the desaturated tones of the piece.

Annica Anderson - P1

My goal for this project was to create a series of boxes that were cohesive enough to photograph nicely together and yet different enough to provide visual interest and a variety of design options. I created three different designs, each embodying a unique characteristic. The first relies on interdependence, the second is very informational, and the final box is full of energy.

I created a sense of interdependence on the first box by arranging the letterforms in a chaotic (yet uniquely ordered) arrangement. The placement of each letterforms depends on the placement of the glyphs around it, and each element on the box relies on the other elements to communicate most effectively. Additionally, there's the second level of interdependence between order and chaos.

My second design is very informational in the cleanly structured, ordered layout of text, which calmly invites the user to explore all sides of the box. On the back of the box, the body copy acts almost as an infographic, relaying important information about various aspects of the cereal.

My third and final piece was meant to convey energy, a sort of kinetic expression on several levels. I drew inspiration from the iconic "snap, crackle, & pop" sounds the cereal makes as you pour the milk in, and tried to create a similar energy in my design. The warm orange-y yellow dots are meant to represent the cereal, and the blue dots mimic the path of milk being poured into a bowl. I believe I created a sense of movement, energy, and ultimately visual interest in this design.

Kevin Baynham Final Boxes

For my Rice Krispies cereal box designs, I chose the words confidence, order, and comfort (from left to right).

1) Comfort - While designing this box, it was important that I always try to provide a comforting feeling. I chose to hand letter the back ground because it provides a supporting image behind the information being shown on the box and it fills the negative space soothingly. The colors are sophisticated and allow the text to rest on the box in a calming fashion; a homey feeling.

2) Confidence - I wanted this box to contain bold and heavy text and rules. While keeping everything organized in a clean manner, I made sure that important text was more visible so that a feeling of confidence was being displayed.

3) Order - Finally, this box cleanly provides information on the box in a orderly fashion. On the front, text is stacked and grouped together so that it is visually appealing while still having a sense of hierarchy. On the side of the box, important health percentages are shown in a easy to read structure. On the back, the rest of the text is neatly organized so that the user knows exactly what they will be reading. This is also the "chosen" box that I would show to a client.

Main Statement
I designed these three Rice Krispies boxes to communicate both the message of the cereal box itself as well as individual characteristics. Each box conveys a different characteristic that helps to present the message in a different manner. One design represents energy, one broadcasts confidence, and the final conveys comfort.

Design #1: Energy
This first design represents energy in the way that is a continuous design, all around the box, always moving forward, never stopping. It is a design that encourages people to interact and explore by picking up the box and turning it around to get the full design and to understand the full message. The front of the box presents positive facts about the cereal and the company, while the back of the box gives an “Get to know everyone's favorite breakfast buddies.”

Design #2: Confidence
This box demonstrates confidence through its bold use of cut type and the statement it makes without being immediately legible. In addition, with the uses of stylish lettering of the sort usually found in fashion magazines, it has a connotation of boldness and confidence in stepping into the world and making a brand new statement.

Proposed Design: Comfort
This third, proposed design is the box that I suggest communicates the message most effectively. It demonstrates comfort through its use of hand lettering, while at the same time giving a sense of fun with the continuing bar code design which wraps around the box. I believe this design is most effective and better than the other two because it communicates in an organized and legible manner, but also grabs your attention with a fun and bold statement, that also communicates a home-grown feel. “These simple grains provide a deliciously simple fun way to start the day.” This is the type of design that feels comfortable sitting on your kitchen table with the family gathered round, beginning their day together.
